“These things now for my companions...”

“These things now for my companions,

                I shall sing beautifully.”

Referred to as the ‘Tenth Muse’ of antiquity, only one poem by the Greek poet Sappho has survived complete. These fragmented writings, alongside readings of mythology, most notably that of the Nine Muses, form the basis of new work by Katherine Bowman and Eddy Carroll.

That Sappho’s text is suffused by missing pieces, allows for personal readings to emerge. Like an Ouroburos, the ancient symbol of a serpent eating its own tail, the artists cycle between universal and individual, creativity and re/connection, while also responding to the sensitivities and detail of each other's practice.
