This Place. That Place. No Place unites eight Melbourne artists in an exploration of the ideas of utopia and dystopia as the much-popularised concepts that define extreme forms of society within fiction writing and film. “More often than not, though, utopian fiction shows its underside, for the idea of utopia is frequently intertwined with notions of dystopia, an experiment that takes a tragic turn.” (Viviene Greene, 2011.)
Looking at these concepts as a comparative of one towards the other, the works of sculpture, photography and painting invite the viewer to undertake a consideration of these notions through elements of the real, the imagined and the implied. Toying with our philosophies of what is true, what could be and what sadly is This Place That Place No Place reminds us of the fragility of our own social architecture.
