Asides takes a retrospective look at Neil Keith Baker’s art encompassing works from the last twenty years. It is also a personal examination of where The Work was really taking place within his studio practice. Baker explores his practice and the shifts in his work via the things created peripherally whilst working on what he previously perceived The (real) Work to be.
“whilst working on what I thought should be “The Work” I have always made asides and it is these asides that have gradually taken centre stage. I’ve always known that these incidental pieces of paper and card and these collections of small objects (both found and made) have had more life than what I was focusing on as The Work and my challenge has been to gradually shift the light onto these shy entities without them knowing that that was what I was doing.”
Baker’s intent for the exhibition is to question the persistence of these incidental works, and their hold on his current practice. Referring to them as asides presents us as the viewers with access to the inner monologue of the artist, whereby, a dialogical approach to the viewing of The Work presents a retrospective ontology hitherto unknown to both the artist and audience.
Neil Keith Baker was born in Luton, England and gained a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Norwich School of Art and Design in 1999. After a period of independent practice he returned to study at The Slade School of Art, London where he completed an MA in Fine Art in 2007. Baker has since lived and worked in Germany and now lives and works in Melbourne where he is represented by Block Projects Gallery, Richmond. He has exhibited internationally prior to being based in Melbourne.
