Of the Earth is a pictorial and theoretical experiment where expressive and symbolic use of colour combine with the formal elements to create form and narrative. Tone's paintings are an exploration of the extension of colour as a semiotic resource - to grasp the manifold Of the Earth into communication. Tone’s use of saturation, modulation, value, composition and hue, highlight the complex relationship between the signifier and the signified.
Colour forms and schemes, as represented by Tone’s works, demonstrate both the adherence and deviation of maintained conventions of the language of colour and the earth. For such language to exist, we must view the composition by the interests and motivations of the maker of the sign and realise that they are not arbitrary or anarchic. To come to understand the differential motivations of Tone is to forgo direct imagery in search for meaning.
